Exploring how future technologies are changing work, and creating jobs of the future

OVERVIEW

How we ran it

Job Creation Program

A career education program for middle school students in which they learn how jobs and future technologies are evolving, then use generative AI and job-creation cards to design a new job of their own.

Program Outcomes

  • A total of [ 5 ] classes and [ 116 ] students took part.
  • ★★★★★ 4.5 points

"This class was really worthwhile. I learned what new jobs are, and it was fun because the class used engaging activities like word quizzes. Imagining and sketching out a future job felt meaningful."

"I had been worrying a lot about what job I should do in the future. In this class I got to create a new job of the future and learn about future careers, and I was happy because it felt like my options for what I could do later have widened."

Program Content

Students look at how jobs have changed from the past to the present and into the future, and come to understand that jobs do not simply disappear but evolve and expand. They then apply the three principles of job creation (discovery, specialization and convergence) to generate new job ideas, and use generative AI to define why each new job is needed and what it does.

Understanding How Jobs Change

  • Exploring changes in the world of work from the past to the present and into the future
  • Examining examples of jobs changing as technology advances
  • Learning why new jobs come into being

Hands-on Practice with the Three Principles of Job Creation

  • Coming up with new jobs through discovery, specialization and convergence
  • Understanding how existing jobs connect with future technologies
  • Developing job ideas based on problems in the local community and everyday life

Defining New Jobs with Generative AI

  • Using AI to come up with a job title, role and required skills for each new job
  • Exploring personal or promising career paths through job creation
  • Completing a presentation worksheet, including images

Deliverables

  • A profile of the new job each student created
  • A WHY? HOW? WHAT? career roadmap
